Massive Snow For Christmas In New York State?

Portions of New York State were socked with large thunderstorms to end this week. As we get ready for the last full weekend of August, some are looking ahead to winter and, more importantly, the Holidays! The big question every year is, will New York State have a white Christmas?

While most people in New York love the summer sunshine and hot days, there is something special about the change of seasons here in the Empire State. From picking apples, to football and hoodie season, the fall to winter transition is special.

The pumpkin spice season is here but the every year the holidays arrive earlier and earlier. This is especially true for the retailers and online businesses.

Will we have a white Christmas this year? Last year, Western New York and the City of Buffalo were hit with a blizzard that killed more than 40 people. While we enjoy a fresh layer of snow on the ground for Christmas, hopefully history will not repeat itself this December.

So what are the chances the 2023 Christmas will be white? Historically speaking, pretty good. According to the National Weather Service,

Binghamton: 65% of Christmas days have an inch or more of snow on the ground (or about 2 out of every 3 years)

Syracuse: 62% of Christmas days have an inch or more of snow on the ground (or about 3 out of every 5 years)

Elmira: 46% of Christmas days have an inch or more of snow on the ground (or about 1 out of every 2 years)

Historically, New York City has measured a snow depth or new snowfall of at least 1" on Christmas Day in 25 of the last 152 years, or about 1 in every 6.
